Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress

Sigiriya is a stunning instance of the an ancient Sri Lankan art, architecture and landscaping. Built more than 1,600 years ago now sinister looking 600 feet high black rock used to be an enormous white cloud floating over the forest surrounding. The sides of the rock were covered with stunning frescoes of naked Nymphs. A massive gatehouse in shape of a lion protected the entry point to the most inner sanctuary of the city, it was the Sky Palace on top of the rock. Sigiriya became a cult before being abandoned. It was hidden in the forest for more than 1500 years. The climb up to the summit is a strenuous climb, but worth the effort. Absolutely a must see place!
